How to Set Music Practice Goals That Actually Work

Learn the difference between outcome goals and process goals, how to set micro-goals for each practice session, and how to track progress so you stay motivated.

Outcome Goals vs. Process Goals

Outcome goal: 'Learn this piece by the recital.' Vague, distant, hard to act on today. Process goal: 'Play measures 16-24 at 80 BPM with zero mistakes today.' Specific, immediate, actionable. Focus on process goals and the outcomes take care of themselves.

The Micro-Goal Method

At the start of each practice session, write down 2-3 micro-goals. Each should be achievable in 10-15 minutes. When you achieve one, check it off. This creates a dopamine feedback loop that makes practice feel rewarding.
