How to Structure a 30-Minute Music Practice Session

Maximize every minute of practice with this proven 30-minute structure — warm-up (5min), technique (10min), repertoire (10min), sight-reading (5min).

The 30-Minute Formula

Minutes 0-5: Warm-up. Long tones, slow scales, breathing exercises. Get your body and mind ready. Never skip this — cold practice causes injury and wasted time.

Minutes 5-15: Technique. Scales, arpeggios, études. Use a metronome. Focus on clean execution, not speed. If you cannot play it perfectly slow, you cannot play it fast.

Minutes 15-25: Repertoire. Your current piece. Work on the hardest 2-4 measures first (not the beginning). Loop them slowly. Only play the full piece once — at the end, to check progress.

Minutes 25-30: Sight-Reading or Fun. Read something new every day. It is the #1 predictor of long-term musical growth.
