Relative pitch — the ability to identify intervals, chords, and melodies by ear relative to a reference note — is trainable and essential for every musician. Perfect (absolute) pitch — naming any note without a reference — is present at birth in about 1 in 10,000 people and cannot be reliably learned as an adult. The good news: relative pitch is more useful for real-world musicianship.

Step 1: Interval Recognition

Step 3: Melodic Dictation

Listen to a short melody (4-8 notes). Write it down on staff paper. Start with simple stepwise melodies in C major. Progress to melodies with skips, different keys, and chromatic notes. This is the ultimate test of integrated ear training.
