Complete ear training guide — develop relative pitch through interval recognition, chord quality identification, and melodic dictation. Plus: can perfect pitch be learned?
Relative pitch — the ability to identify intervals, chords, and melodies by ear relative to a reference note — is trainable and essential for every musician. Perfect (absolute) pitch — naming any note without a reference — is present at birth in about 1 in 10,000 people and cannot be reliably learned as an adult. The good news: relative pitch is more useful for real-world musicianship.
Learn each interval's distinct sound using famous melody associations. Minor 2nd: Jaws theme. Major 2nd: Happy Birthday. Minor 3rd: Greensleeves. Major 3rd: When the Saints. Perfect 4th: Here Comes the Bride. Tritone: The Simpsons. Perfect 5th: Twinkle Twinkle. Minor 6th: Love Story. Major 6th: My Bonnie. Minor 7th: Star Trek. Major 7th: Take On Me. Octave: Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Test yourself daily with our interval flashcards.
Learn to hear major vs. minor vs. diminished vs. augmented triads. Then add seventh chords: major 7th, minor 7th, dominant 7th, half-diminished, fully-diminished. Each has a distinct emotional color. Practice daily: have someone play a chord; identify its quality.
Listen to a short melody (4-8 notes). Write it down on staff paper. Start with simple stepwise melodies in C major. Progress to melodies with skips, different keys, and chromatic notes. This is the ultimate test of integrated ear training.
True absolute pitch is generally considered unlearnable after early childhood. However, adults can develop excellent 'pseudo-absolute pitch' — the ability to recall specific pitches from memory (like always knowing what a C sounds like from repeated exposure).
10 minutes of daily ear training for 3-6 months produces noticeable improvement in most musicians. Consistent short sessions beat occasional long sessions.
