How to Arrange Music for Small Ensemble — Duet to Quintet

Learn the principles of arranging for 2-5 instruments — voice leading, range considerations, doubling, and how to make a small group sound full and balanced.

Know Each Instrument's Range

Before writing a single note, know the comfortable range of every instrument in your ensemble. Writing above or below the playable range is the #1 beginner arranger mistake. Use a range chart for reference.

Voice Leading Rules

Move each voice (instrument) the smallest possible distance between chords. Avoid parallel fifths and octaves in traditional arranging. In contemporary styles, parallel motion is acceptable but should be intentional, not accidental.

Balance and Texture

In a trio (3 instruments), you have melody, harmony, and bass — one function per instrument. In a quintet (5 instruments), you can double the melody at the octave, add inner harmony, and still have a strong bass line. More instruments = more textural options.
