How to Align Lyrics Under Musical Notes

Master lyric alignment — syllable placement, hyphens for multi-syllable words, melisma underlines, and verse numbering for clean, readable vocal scores.

Why Lyric Alignment Matters

Misaligned lyrics are the #1 readability issue in vocal music. When singers cannot tell which syllable goes with which note, rehearsal grinds to a halt. Proper lyric alignment makes your scores look professional and sight-readable on first glance.

Rule 1: One Syllable Per Note

Each syllable of text goes directly under the note it is sung on. If a word has three syllables (re-mem-ber), each syllable gets its own note position. Use hyphens between syllables to show they belong to the same word.

Rule 2: Melisma — The Extension Line

When one syllable is held across multiple notes, use an underscore line (________) starting from the syllable and extending under all the notes it covers. This tells the singer to hold that syllable while changing pitches.

Rule 3: Verse Numbering

When multiple verses share the same melody, write verse 1 lyrics directly under the notes and verses 2, 3 etc. below as a separate block, clearly numbered.
