Complete guide to writing pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff, crescendo, decrescendo, sforzando and subito markings — make your scores musically expressive.
A score without dynamics is a script without emotion markings. Dynamics tell the performer how loud or soft to play — and more importantly, how the volume changes over time. Writing them clearly is as important as writing the right notes.
Place dynamic letters (pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff) directly below the staff for the first voice/instrument. Place above for a second voice. Align with the note where the dynamic change occurs — not before it.
Use hairpin symbols: an opening V (<) for crescendo (get louder) and a closing V (>) for decrescendo (get softer). Extend the hairpin under the exact notes it covers — from the start note to the peak note.
