How to Write a Bridge Section That Elevates Your Song

The bridge is the most powerful structural element in songwriting — learn how to use key changes, rhythmic shifts, and lyrical perspective changes to create an unforgettable bridge.

What a Bridge Does

The bridge is the 'twist' in your song — the section that breaks the pattern of verse-chorus repetition and gives the listener something unexpected. A great bridge makes a good song memorable. The bridge typically occurs after the second chorus, about 2/3 through the song.

Techniques for a Strong Bridge

  • Key change: Move to the relative minor (or relative major if your song is in minor)
  • Rhythmic shift: Double-time feel, half-time feel, or a new rhythmic motif
  • Lyrical perspective change: If verses tell a story, let the bridge reveal the deeper meaning
  • New chord: Introduce a chord that has not appeared yet — iii, bVII, or IV-iv
