A teacher's guide to recital preparation — selecting repertoire, managing performance anxiety, stage etiquette, rehearsal logistics, and making the experience positive for every student.
Choose pieces students can play confidently — not pieces that push their limits. A flawless performance of an easier piece builds more confidence than a shaky performance of a harder one. The recital is a celebration, not an exam.
6 weeks out: Select piece, begin learning. 4 weeks: Piece should be memorized or nearly so. 2 weeks: Practice performing — play for family, record yourself, simulate recital conditions. 1 week: Run-throughs only; no major changes. Day before: Light practice, early bedtime.
