Build guitar speed without tension or sloppiness — progressive tempo method, economy picking, legato technique, and the practice habits of fast guitarists.
The harder you try to play fast, the slower you get. Tension is the enemy of speed. The fastest guitarists — from Yngwie Malmsteen to modern shredders — play with minimal finger pressure and maximum relaxation. This guide teaches you to build speed the right way.
Find the fastest BPM where you can play a passage perfectly. Reduce by30 BPM. Loop until effortless. Increase by4 BPM. Repeat. At+4 BPM, your brain barely notices the increase — but over20 sessions, you gain80 BPM. This is how professional guitarists build speed: incrementally, patiently, with zero tension.
Minimize pick movement. For adjacent strings, continue the pick motion in the same direction (sweep picking). For alternate picking, use the smallest possible pick strokes — barely grazing the string. Watch videos of fast players: their picking hand barely moves.
With dedicated practice, most guitarists can reach clean16th notes at140-160 BPM within1-2 years. Beyond180 BPM requires specialized technique and years of focused practice.
