Writing a song means combining two creative acts: composing a melody and writing lyrics. The best songwriters keep both elements together on the same page — and the right paper makes all the difference.
Use a lyric + staff combo template — a grand staff or treble staff with a dedicated lyric line below each musical staff. Write the melody notes on the staff, then align each syllable of your lyrics directly under the note it's sung on.
Each syllable goes under its corresponding note. Multi-syllable words use hyphens between syllables (e.g., "re-mem-ber"). Extended notes that hold one syllable use an underline (________) after the syllable to show how long it's held.
Label each section clearly above the staff: [Verse 1], [Chorus], [Bridge]. Leave extra space between sections for readability. Most popular songs follow a verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure.
A lead sheet contains the melody (in standard notation), lyrics aligned under the melody, and chord symbols above the staff. This is the standard format for songwriters, session musicians, and music publishers worldwide.
