Time Signature — Music Definition

A symbol at the beginning of a piece, appearing as two numbers stacked like a fraction. The top number is beats per measure; the bottom number is which note gets one beat.

Etymology & Historical Origin

Common time (4/4) is sometimes written as a C — but it does NOT stand for 'common'. It comes from medieval mensural notation where a full circle (O) represented triple meter and a broken semicircle (C) represented duple meter.

Why It Matters for Musicians

Understanding time signature is essential for reading and writing music accurately. Whether you are a beginner learning to read notation or an experienced composer, knowing how this musical element works improves your musicianship.
