Key Signature — Music Definition

Sharps (#) or flats (b) placed at the beginning of each staff, between the clef and the time signature. They tell the musician which notes are consistently raised or lowered throughout the piece.

Etymology & Historical Origin

Key signatures eliminate the need to write accidentals before every F# in a piece in G major. Each key signature corresponds to one major key and one relative minor key.

Why It Matters for Musicians

Understanding key signature is essential for reading and writing music accurately. Whether you are a beginner learning to read notation or an experienced composer, knowing how this musical element works improves your musicianship.
